Sing for World Peace - Summer of Love 2007
|
my friend Steve contacted me and asked me to help co-ordinate "Sing for World Peace & Summer of Love 2007".

in his words:
Next year, 2007 will mark the 40th anniversary of what became known as the “Summer of Love”. San Francisco’s Haight Asbury became the epicentre of a cultural revolution. There was the Mantra Rock Dance ~ introduced by the poet and writer Allen Ginsberg, the Hare Krishna’s and starring at the top of the bill, the almighty and legendary Grateful Dead. It was an historic event that pushed music, people, concepts, and the World into a new age. Throughout the night and onto the streets people sang and danced for Love and Peace. It was infectious and the love bug spread into a full blown epidemic.
People started to arrive in San Francisco in their thousands hearing that the revolution had begun and that this was where it was happening. As the song goes “If you are going to San Francisco, be sure to wear some flowers in your hair…..” and people did.
On the other side of the World a crazy war raged in Vietnam and America’s youth were coming home in body bags, or maimed and disfigured, blown out and driven insane. President Nixon was set on a course of destruction. And the people started to cry out, protest and search for answers and meaning to life.
As the war in Vietnam reached alarming heights a counter culture arose, people adopted love and peace in preference to war and strife. Many answered the call to the current slogan of “Make love not War” and America saw a never ending flood of seekers hit the highways hitching rides to Frisco’. The Summer of Love was born.
The Golden Gate Park became a garden of delights in the colourful dawn of the revolution, where people gathered and happenings happened. People danced, sang, embraced and loved. The scene of many love events such as the “Human Be-In” led by the incredible Jefferson Airplane and also attended by Allen Ginsberg, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Jerry Rubin and Dr. Timothy Leary took place amongst countless others.
The love bug spread around the globe and inspired millions of people to embrace the simple yet sublime concept of love and peace. Our culture changed, our music changed and hearts changed too. The Summer of Love became a world wide event, led by our singers and songwriters and lasted more than a decade.
2007 ~ The Summer of Love continues.
To mark the anniversary of that eventful year an event will be taking place in Canterbury in England during the week of, 16th – 23rd July, 2007, a similar event in many ways to the Mantra Rock Dance of 1967, and known as the Perpetual Choirs festival. An event based upon all people of all ages, nations, religions, communities and concepts coming together to sing for World peace.
As time goes on, details and information about this festival will be made available through this page. My long time, dear friend Michael Lloyd is organizing the event, amongst others, and will be announcing the details shortly (he is currently moving house). There will be contact numbers and info packs available shortly. Watch this space.
We live in troubled times and the horrors of war have become an unhealthy constant. People are dying, brutally maimed and being tortured needlessly every day. Something has to give. The craziness cannot continue.
The week of 16th – 23rd July 2007 will become known as “Sing for World Peace Week”. It is hoped that events, happenings, festivals, projects and protests will happen on a global scale.
Someone once said that when people sit around a table trying to discuss World peace, such talks always end up in more tensions and war. However, when people get together and sing, something magical happens, all concepts of sectarianism disappear and unity unfolds and people cry tears of love. Music and song is the food of love.
Sing for World Peace Week.
Wherever you are, whoever you are, you can join in and make the Summer of Love happen all over again. During the week, 16th – 23rd July 2007, it is hoped that many festivals and happenings will be arranged locally around the world. People, religions, communities, individuals, and organizations coming together as one, under a banner of unity in diversity, to sing for World Peace.
It is hoped that the Canterbury festival here in the UK will have live link ups with other happenings around the World.
How you can help
As many enthusiastic people as possible are needed to act as coordinators and organizers for events. Bringing together the World’s many cultures, churches, religious leaders, communities and people will take some effort, but a goal that is achievable and wanted, longed for even in these troubled times. We simply have to make it happen.
Events and venues can be as grand as possible or as simple as a few people singing in the park or your local church, temple, synagogue, mosque or wherever. To sing for World peace is easy, we can all do that.
Singers and songwriters are obviously needed too. If you are one or know any, then please, please do all you can to make Sing for World Peace Week rock. There are many new singers, songwriters, artists, bands and buskers in this world right now, they just need to be invited to participate by playing, singing and writing songs for World Peace.
We have a whole year to organize this unique mass event, a week of amazing sound vibration and hearts coming together calling out for the craziness in this World to stop.
If you would like to know more and help in any way feel free to contact me.
Watch this space for all the latest news on the Canterbury Perpetual Choirs Festival and other happenings across the globe.
Oh yeah! Photographers are needed too, to record and promote this event.
One idea I have and that I would like to launch as soon as possible is to compile a CD featuring as many varied artists from around the World, each singing in their own unique way for peace. I'm hoping too that this should contain some indiginous songs and chants too. I can hear the sound of African tribal choirs and Tibetan chants alongside folk-rock and blues. I hope to launch the CD quite early as I think it would be an ideal fundraiser alongside T-Shirts and badges, as some funding will be needed. I'm sure too that with half a dozen or more enthusiastic people around the world, we can really get things rockin'.
Steve has asked me to create a logo symbol for the Sing for World Peace, and to create a T-shirt design for the Summer of Love 2007. I will do my very best !
He has also asked me to see about planning an event here in my hometown, and getting people involved. I have never been involved in coordinating such an event but I am willing to give it a try. If you are interested in being a part of this event in any way - please contact me at unityproject @ gmail.com and let me know. |
