Flickr Focus Friday 14: P S Zollo
|
Every Friday I am going to feature a Flickr contact I think you will enjoy. I think I have a lot of interesting Flickr contacts and they take some pretty amazingly wonderful photos.
This week I am focused on: P S Zollo
So I am back with the Flickr Focus this week and I think I couldn't have picked a better one to jump back into this with.
P S Zollo is one of a kind, and he views each person he meets and photographs as one of kind. He listens and he cares.

I think aside from the most amazing collection of portraits that he has collected and hopes to publish in a book (I hope he does too, I'd buy it right now)... it is their tales he writes in the captions that really put it all together. Paul Zollo doesn't just stand back and snap a photo, he meets his subjects, gets their stories and tells us, shares with us the details that bring it all the more to life.

It is moving, powerful and his images are some of best "Soul Captures" I have ever seen. All too often we tend to focus on the beautiful people of the world, and shun from the hard reality of humanity that we sometimes find starring us in the face. We as humans tend to not want to face those truths, as one of Zollo's souls expounded, "No one cares." But some of us truly do, and Zollo is one of them. He cares, and it comes across in his tender photos, his honesty in sharing these lives with us, the folks who typically take no notice. Thank you Zollo for making us take notice. Thank you for being our eyes and ears.

P S Zollo lives in Hollywoodland, America, as he puts it. He is a creative soul, a writer, a musician and a family man. Even though a portion of his photos do indeed show off the glitz of the fantasy of Hollywood, I think the fact he spends time to document the other side of life in the most glorified place on earth, makes him unique.

PLEASE go read the captions for each of these magnificent photos. Particularly this one of "Doc" because in the comments someone accuses P S Zollo of exploiting the subjects of his work, no different than a stalker of a celebrity. I totally disagree. As Zollo states, "and it is true that i have never taken a photo without his consent. or the consent of any of these subjects. if i did, i think that would violate the good spirit that surrounds them."
Doc in May, originally uploaded by P.S.Zollo.
And yes "good spirit" certainly surrounds them.
P S Zollo has wonderful photo collection, but I think these ones really reach out a grab you, wake you up and hopefully make you take notice of the real world living around you.
[EDIT: Paul Zollo is editor for Bluerailroad Magazine and you can find further information on Paul Zollo here: http://www.bluerailroad.com/misc/credits.html]

Hi B. Thanks for dropping by my page. I had never heard of Zollo, the pictures are beautiful and it is awesome that this man takes time to meet the person behind the face. You're right when you say, we too often just look at the beautiful... I always feel embarrassed to look at the dimunes or handicapped like I'm scared to see their pain in their eyes or something. it's a shame really.

Ophelia, I hope you have a chance to spend some time viewing his work. I know you'll be moved.
Phaedra, What did you think?
Laura, beautiful is in everything isn't it, nnot just our standardized idea of it.
Helene, thanks for stopping by, I think we all fear that emotional response, more so because we fear that to have one is an insult to the person, but typically speaking I think to not react would be a worse reaction.
Cheers to you all.
