As you might know by some of the pictures I share, at work we have a lovely salt water aquarium.
[June 2007]
[February 2008]
I miss my old fresh water aquarium, I have considered getting some fish. But really... one more thing to look after and worry about and spend money on... so even though it would be nice... not.
I have this tank at work to amuse me, and I feed the critters in there. One of my many extra responsibilities, my boss always forgot to feed them, so I just took over the job.
I say good night to the fishies when I leave every night.
So here is a list of some of the things living in this tank.
There are Feather Duster Worms, and sponges... everything in there is living, moving and growing - even the rock (well the micro and macroscopic marine life that live inside of it) and the coral. I don't even know what most of it is called.
[May 2008]
Two happy little Clown Fish. Or as my boss's kids call them, Nemos. They are the busy bodies of the tank, almost pushy and certainly bite and nip at my boss when he cleans the tank.
The was a big Cleaner Shrimp but one weekend we came back and he was just gone. No trace of him so we got a new baby shrimp and he is growing fast.
There is one black and white striped Bangaii Cardinal. He seems timid, hides in the coral.
There was a small blue Goby in there but he too seems to have vanished recently... ummm where did he go?
[February 2008]
This blue and black striped legged Hermit Crab is a bull dozer, he climbs on everything, knocks stuff over and barrels through.
There are two smaller red hermit crabs too.
And my favorite of all, the Emerald Crab (picture below). He rules. His little red eyes and his fuzzy legs.
[August 2008]
And several snails.
There was a big clam for awhile but my boss decided it took up to much room so he returned it. Same went for the giant Anemone that took over the tank. Man was that thing massive.
There were several small starfish but they died, they are hard to keep.
But this big starfish has done well. [August 2008]
But there are lots of hidden things, worms in the sand and coral, that stick out their little tentacles at feeding time. Then one day I noticed a little creature living in a hole in the coral. Upon much research in trying to figure out what it was, I discovered that it most likely is a Mantis Shrimp, a baby one.
It's tiny now, brown and small, but if it is a Mantis Shrimp we will have to have him removed because as they get older, and bigger, they will eat everything in the tank. Check out this video of a full grown Mantis Shrimp killing a crab.
Wouldn't that be a cool "pet"?
